Overdraft and NSF fee reduction

I don’t want to sound rude but why?

BECU provides options for overdraft fees to be completely avoidable. Are you aware of this? If you are aware of these services then do you think it is a matter of educating members better about how to bank wisely to avoid overdraft fees and the services that a member could apply for?

NSF in my opinion is there to discourage people from bouncing checks. I also understand there is additional work internally to a financial institution when a check bounces due to NSF. There are so many other options today that are more secure than checks that do not impose NSF fees from my understanding.

However, it would be greatly appreciated for additional insight for the community on your idea.

Hi @LarryofEdmonds and welcome to the community! Just to get it out of the way – we agree fees are a bummer, which is why we sit down each year to review the few fees we charge to make sure they're in line or better than other banks and credit unions. It's important to us to ensure we're giving back as much to our members as possible, and that includes reducing and eliminating fees. We're happy to have just eliminated foreign transaction fees on our debit card (read more about that here.

Also, as @Coolcolly mentions, we do offer a number of ways to avoid being charged the fees you mention altogether, and we'd love to talk with you about your options to see how we can help. If you'd like to talk, please feel free to contact our Member Care Contact Center at 800-233-2328. Thanks! JohnS
