How Can We Help Get Families Thinking And Talking About Money Together?

Have you ever had to answer a question from kids about how much money you make? How are you ensuring that the children in your life will make responsible financial decisions as they grow? Can you remember the last conversation your family had about money? How did it feel?

We’ve heard from BECU members that talking with kids about money can be hard. It can be tricky to find the right opportunity for the conversation, and most teens will choose to learn about personal finance only when it’s up against even more uncomfortable topics.

We want to make these conversations less uncomfortable, and are exploring innovative ways to expand our financial education offerings in order to better serve families and create the next generation of financially literate adults.

We're excited to hear your ideas about how we can help and best support you in creating a financially resilient and knowledgeable family when it comes to finances and financial literacy. We already have many resources out there for teens, youths and adults on a variety of topics; this endeavor is completely family focused.

Here are some questions to get you started thinking about what would be meaningful to help your family have conversations about money:

  • When/what was the last conversation you had with your kids about money?
  • What are you doing now to teach kids in your life about money?
  • How can we help you pay your kids money/allowance and teach them how to manage it?
  • How do you handle money questions or conversations within your family?
  • What resources or support do you wish you had?
  • What tools would be helpful in teaching your family responsibility around money and budgeting?
  • Post your experiences and ideas below to help us build a unique and pioneering financial education platform for families.
