We are pleased to announce that Contactless Visa credit cards are here!
Need To Know
As of today, all new and reissued BECU business and consumer Visa credit cards will be contactless-enabled.
What is a contactless payment?
Contactless payments use short-range wireless technology to provide fast, secure communication between contactless-enabled cards or devices (for example, smartphones) and contactless-enabled checkout terminals. When cardholders tap their contactless Visa card at a contactless-enabled checkout terminal, the payment is processed using the same dynamic security technology as with EMV chip card payments. Each transaction is accompanied by a one-time code that securely protects payment information.
What is a contactless card?
A contactless card is a chip card that is embedded with a near field communication (NFC) antenna that can be used for close-range payments. It also has been referred to as a dual interface card. The name is simply referring to the fact that the card supports contact (swipe or dip) and contactless payments. Contactless payments use the same NFC technology as mobile wallets, such as Apple Pay and Android Pay.
What are the features and benefits?
It’s Fast: When you “tap” to pay with your contactless Visa card, the payment is processed in seconds.
It’s Easy: You simply need to tap your contactless Visa card on the contactless-enabled checkout terminal to make a purchase.
It’s Secure: Contactless Visa cards use the same dynamic security as chip cards. Each transaction is accompanied by a onetime code that securely protects payment information.
You Can’t Pay Accidentally: Your card must be within 1-2 inches of the contactless-enabled checkout terminal for a transaction to occur, positioned there for 1-2 seconds, and the checkout terminal will only read one card at a time.
Offline Data Authentication: BECU contactless credit cards support what’s known as Offline Data Authentication (ODA), which is frequently used by transit and maritime agencies across the world.
You Can Still Pay the Traditional Way: BECU contactless cards also support traditional payments via an EMV chip – where the card is physically inserted into a chip reader, as well as magnetic stripe “swipe” payments when either of the previous payment methods is not available.
How to use a contactless card
Look for the Contactless Indicator on the front of your card.
If your card has the indicator, you can use it wherever you see the Contactless Symbol on checkout terminals. (See images below).
Not all merchants accept contactless payments.
Tap to pay. Hold your card within 1-2 inches of the Contactless Symbol. If a contactless card is too far away from the checkout terminal, the terminal may not read the payment at checkout.
If you would like a contactless card reissued, and your card is not lost or stolen, give us a call at 1-800-233-2328 or stop by your local branch. Please note, Reissued cards will have the same card number, but the CVV code and expiration date will change.
